The Horse in Art. The words of Aligi Sassu

Painting. I understood it as a creation of the soul, as a dictation of the most intimate and natural feelings. Of course, it happens that the stimulus comes from the outside world but if it does not marry well with what is in his soul, he remains knowledge but does not become a painter. (Aligi Sassu).

The horse in art and works of Aligi Sassu: we find horses restored by painting, with ceramics and with bronze. Horses that seem to emerge from the bowels of the earth or emerge from the sea, in mythological transpositions.
Horses painted with a warm “red” color that connects them to the element “fire”, which means “destruction” or, conversely, “regeneration”.

The horse in art and works of Aligi Sassu. But we also find horses painted in white which is connected to the fertile symbol of the element “water” and the birth of Venus. Perhaps in homage to ancient shamanic experiences.

From Mallorca, in 1973, the Maestro wrote “Yes, I continue to paint and draw horses, not frivolous because they come from the recesses of the soul, every time an idea comes to mind (so it seems to me like a certain Raffaello da Urbino) or it burns , a subtle image of pure pictorial material takes shape…”

“The horse is therefore a constant source of inspiration that Aligi Sassu faces with the “weapons” of art. So a pure pictorial and plastic material gives life to his horses – think of the cycle of the “red men” and the theme of the Mediterranean. They are wild colts whose mane is crushed by the wind and flutters in “raging” landscapes or in an infinite space, with ardor and timidity.” (MZ).
