The horse is not a particularly fast animal if we compare it with most predators (the horse is prey) due to its fairly heavy build and characterized by legs with a single toe, covered by a horny hoof.
The movements that the horse can perform without moving are rearing and kicking, even for playing, while the natural gaits of the horse can be summarized in four movements:
1. The step
2. The trot
3. The canter
4. The gallop
However, there are other gaits that appear to be a natural fit for certain breeds and have been developed by humans through training and selection.
The Gaits of the Horse. The Step
The mother of all gaits is the classic resting gait, with four beats.
We see this gait when horses graze in the meadows.
The image is that of a slow gait that respects the silence of nature and the step is characterized by lateral support of the feet (left rear and left front, right rear and right front).
One of its variants is the Ambio, a two-step gait between the walk and the trot, in which the horse moves the two limbs together that are on the same side, characteristic of Andalusian horses.

The Gaits of the Horse. The Trot
It is a more tiring and harder gait than the walk, with two stroke beats, which correspond to the grounding of the two opposing diagonal bipeds: the horse places the diagonal pair of legs on the ground simultaneously and then after a suspension it pushes on the other diagonal.

It is the three-beat gait, characterized by a suspension time.
If you go around a clockwise circle the horse “leads” with the right front leg. Moving to the right and starting with the left hind leg, left diagonal, simultaneously the left front leg and the right hind leg touch the ground and the last limb that will put the foot on the ground will be the right front leg.

It is when we see the horse explode with all its strength and liveliness: it is the four-beat gait of the horse that pushes it to considerable speeds close to 70 km per hour.
