Along with hunting, it can be considered the oldest equestrian discipline ever practiced on horseback: its history in fact derives from the ancient Persian tribal games of 700 BC. and then subsequently spread to the East.
Moving closer to the present day, we heard about it in 1859 with the birth of the 1st Polo Club in Manipur, India, from where it was imported by the British who, especially in India, had numerous military units.
In 1869 he arrived in England, welcomed by an overwhelming enthusiasm that led to the organization of tournaments even at night, where the first rules of this new sport were created.

Polo the Sport of Kings. In Argentina…
In Argentina, another homeland of the discipline, Polo arrived in 1875 where, at the beginning of the 20th century, numerous clubs were born while in Italy the first polo tournament was held in 1926.
In the 20th century, polo developed in many countries and achieved such success as to deserve a place among the Olympic disciplines and is currently played all over the world.
Also used as an image vehicle, it is a spectacular game called “the King of sports, the sport of Kings”.
Polo the Sport of Kings. On the playing…
On the playing field, a rectangle of flat, grassy surface approximately 275 meters long and 183 meters wide, two teams of four players each must push a wooden ball, 8 centimeters in diameter and weighing between 120 and 300 grams, into the opponent’s goal, pulling it only with the help of a bamboo stick approximately 130 centimeters long and ending in a “T”.
The matches are divided into 7 halves (chukkas) of 8 minutes each, at the end of each half the horse is changed so as not to subject it to too much fatigue and after each goal the teams change sides.
Horses bred in Argentina are normally used, very fast and specially selected for this discipline, agile and capable of suddenly changing direction.
The game, bound by very strict rules designed to protect the horse above all, is controlled by three referees: two in the saddle in the field, to follow the game closely, and one off the field.

Polo is also played in winter on snow-covered fields, where the horses’ shoes are equipped with non-slip crampons and the game ball is larger and colored to be better identified.

…and he is the mascot of the Giornata Nazionale del Cavallo
His name is Clop and he is an anthropomorphic horse who lives in Cavallolandia, a city inhabited by horses like him, overlooking the gulf of Mane in the wind on the island of Horses Island, in the Ocean of Seahorses.
In Cavallolandia live Mayor Tom Capezza, Clop’s secretary Blonde Mane, the industrialist Onofrio Pezzato, the chef Hippo Gnam Gnam of the bar restaurant Biada & Fieno, grandmother Barbozza, the policeman Lukketto Mc Prison, his friend Amedeo Ambio… and there is no shortage of “rascals” like Brigliesciole, the thief who lives in the castle of the evil Truccacorse.
Clop is waiting for you here.
Your visit will make him neigh with joy.
