In Italy, life with the horse began on…
The story goes that…

History tells that on the path that separates Punta Cavallo Brindisi from the Cathedral of Brindisi in 1250, three miles, the first Corpus Domini Procession in the history of the Church took place, born in 1247 in the diocese of Liège, in Belgium.
The introduction of this holiday in the Christian calendar is mainly due to a woman, Sister Giuliana of Cornillon, an Augustinian nun who lived in the first half of the thirteenth century.
But let’s go in order and discover when life with the horse began in Italy.
Sister Juliana of Cornillon
In Italy, life with the horse began on… Now a step back.
The King of France Louis IX the Saint, engaged in the Seventh Crusade, after the capture of Damietta in Egypt, attempted to conquer Cairo but the enterprise failed and the holy King ended up prisoner of the ferocious Saladin.
The sum requested for the ransom was one million crowns but unfortunately the King did not have such a sum and so he left for the West to obtain the money and left as a pledge to Saladin the most precious good that, usually, was transported by his flagship: the Most Holy Sacrament.

The King of France Louis IX the Saint landed in Puglia and…
Having landed in Puglia, he found the help of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia who had coins specially minted in the mint of the city of Brindisi.
Louis IX thus returned to Saladin who, impressed by the loyalty of the king of France and especially by his devotion to the Eucharist, preferred to renounce the rich ransom.
Those coins would later take the name of “tornesi” because they had returned to the starting point.
On its second landing in Brindisi, Louis IX’s ship encountered considerable difficulties and was forced by the waves to stop three miles south of the city.
To welcome the French king, in addition to the emperor Frederick II, the then bishop of Brindisi Peter III who, either because of the poor accessibility of the area or because of walking problems due to old age, reached the place on horseback and, thanks to this episode, we have confirmation of the first date when life with horses began in Italy.
Certainly in Italy man began his life with the horse before this date but the first certain date is, in fact, the last Sunday of May 1250.
The landing rock later took the name of “Punta Cavallo” and here, in memory of what happened, King Charles of Agiò, brother of Louis, had a tower built.
The Chronicle of Saint Antonino…
The Chronicle of Saint Antoninus of Florence recalls the event with these words:
“… after the third night of navigation, at first light of day, the ship carrying the King repeatedly struck a rock or spit of land, and so violently that the sailors and all the others who were on board believed for certain that they were about to sink. Terrified by the very strong and ruinous impact, the Priests and all the others found instead that the most holy King was calmly absorbed in praying before the Body of Christ: and it was the firm conviction of all that only through his merits and his prayers, the almighty God had saved them from that mortal danger”.
From Punta Cavallo, the Eucharistic procession headed to the city: the bishop on horseback with the ciborium containing the Most Holy Sacramento, escorted by the King of France and the Holy Roman Emperor, and accompanied by the clergy and the faithful.
Since then, in Brindisi, the Corpus Domini procession has commemorated that first miraculous procession, which was an inspiration and example for the entire Christian world.
Even today, the Archbishop, successor of Peter III, carries the Most Holy Eucharist through the streets of the city, riding a horse “decorated”, that is, harnessed for the occasion, escorted by the Knights of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, and accompanied by the clergy and representatives of the lay world of the Diocese.
Having reached the seafront, in one of the symbolic places of the city, near the two famous columns that look out over the sea, the procession stops for a few moments for the Eucharistic blessing.
When the military ships involved in the Great War (1915-18) were moored in this place, the blessing was addressed to the fleet which in turn responded with twenty-one cannon salutes.
The procession finally ends in the square in front of the Cathedral, with the solemn Eucharistic blessing.
The Corpus Domini procession in Brindisi
The event is unique…
The event is unique in that only in Brindisi is Corpus Domini carried on the back of a horse.
