Horses have been at the service of man for many years, generous, patient and willing.
Man has ridden them, driven them, used them to tow heavy loads, to plow fields, fought many battles with them and for centuries they were the only means of transport.
Now we use horses above all for pleasure and it is our duty to get to know them well, to try to understand them and treat them with the utmost kindness.
They are very strong and delicate and allow us to tell them what to do because they rely on our guidance.
Here we look at how the horse is born and grows.
Horses and ponies can continue to grow until they reach maturity, around the age of five or six.

How the horse is born and grows. Before…
Before then the bones are not strong enough for strenuous work.
As they age, the shape of their teeth changes and they are considered old around nineteen/twenty, but they can continue without problems for another ten years and live into their thirties.
To understand the life stages of the horse we start with the pregnant mare (the horse’s mother), which means that a female is pregnant and carries her foal for eleven months and towards the end of this period she appears conspicuously round, especially when seen from the front and from behind.
Pregnant mare
When the foal is born the mare licks it well to clean it and, generally, the little one stands up on its legs almost immediately, when it takes its first suck of milk.
Although uncertain and shaky, natural-born foals walk, trot and gallop alongside their mothers within hours of birth.
How the horse is born and grows. In the first twelve months…
In the first twelve months of life a horse, or a pony, is called a foal and is very funny due to its long legs which, however, allow it to move quickly.
Foals suck milk until they are four or six months old but begin to graze on grass much earlier.
A very rare twin birth
How the horse is born and grows. Between…
Between twelve and twenty-four months it is called a yearling, but it is still unsteady and has quite long legs.
Then, around the age of two, he begins to resemble an adult horse, even though he is still quite immature.
Finally at four years old a horse is practically mature and ready to work.
Between the ages of five and ten a horse is in the prime of its life and to confirm this the horses that compete are at the peak of their possibilities in this period of years.
