Horseback Riding on the Costa Smeralda

Horseback Riding on the Costa Smeralda.
We know the Costa Smeralda

The Costa Smeralda owes its name to the color of its sea and to the chromatic variations of the transparent waters that creep into a labyrinth of granite rocks, forming dream landscapes.

If you don’t know it yet, the Costa Smeralda (Monti di Mola in the Gallura area) is a stretch of coast of Gallura north-east of Sardinia about 55 kilometers long that goes from Capo Ferro, just north of Porto Cervo, to the Gulf of Cugnana, at the Rena Bianca Portisco beach in the municipality of Olbia.

Although it is a well-identified territory, sometimes the Costa Smeralda is confused with the whole north-eastern coast of Sardinia, including the villages of Poltu Quatu, Baja Sardinia, Cannigione and Porto Rotondo.

Horseback Riding on the Costa Smeralda

The whole Costa Smeralda is characterized by dream beaches, lonely coves and, from Porto Cervo proceeding south, there are enchanting beaches that from Golfo del Pevero lead to Cala di Volpe passing through Punta Capriccioli, in front of which you will see the islands of Mortorio and Soffi, in the La Maddalena National Park but, until the first half of the twentieth century, it was mainly uninhabited where only the history and culture of a region with ancient traditions lived.

The Costa Smeralda today

The Costa Smeralda we know today was born on 14 March 1962 with the Costa Smeralda Consortium wanted by decision of Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, imam of the Nizarite Ismaili Muslims, of British citizenship and soon became the place of the international jet set and where films such as “Vacanze sulla Costa Smeralda” (next to the poster) and “Vita Smeralda” were shot.

Film Vacanze sulla Costa Smeralda

The heart of the Costa Smeralda is Porto Cervo with the residential areas of Romazzino, Capriccioli, Cava di Volpe, Golfo Pevero, Pantogia and Liscia di Vacca without forgetting Porto Rotondo overlooking the wide Gulf of Cugnana, with its villas and squares with shops each type, set by a magnificent nature.

Porto Cervo

Historical symbol of Porto Cervo is the church of Stella Maris, built in 1968 and which integrates with the surrounding architecture, is located in an extraordinary position with the panoramic view that goes from the harbor inlet on one side and Monte Moro from the other and houses the Mater Dolorosa, by the painter El Greco.

In this extraordinary place there are low houses, surrounded by the vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub and granite, villas, golf courses and marinas perfectly integrated into nature where a sparkling nightlife is unleashed in the trendy clubs and small restaurants.

We suggest three horseback riding but check first that they are suitable for your experience and, if you want, on the Fise Sardegna website, selecting the province of Sassari, you will certainly find the equestrian centers that will be happy to help you and, if you are traveling with your horse, read our tips here. Padula Saloni, a protected wildlife area founded in 1979, close to the Gulf of Arzachena and the beach of Lu Postu, is a Mediterranean scrub of just under 400 hectares with a freshwater lake (a “padula”, as they call it in Gallura).
You will live in the extraordinary biodiversity of its fauna, in particular its approximately 190 species of birds, including 77 nesting species, considered among the most precious in Northern Sardinia.

Not far from the Costa Smeralda, the beach surrounding the Gulf of Arzachena is the perfect place for a horseback ride for experts but also for beginners where, in a quiet and fascinating atmosphere, you can also experience the unforgettable experience of bathing in horse.

Crossing the beach of Lu Postu you can climb the hills surrounding the town of Cannigione and enjoy the breathtaking view of the coast and the Maddalena archipelago.
